COURSE DESCRIPTION OVERVIEW and LOCATIONS
ZCAF is proud of our growing partnership with DC Public Schools (DCPS). DCPS
HOW is hosted by Columbia Heights Education Campus (CHEC) and Takoma
Education Campus (TEC). DCPS HOW is designed for any DCPS
student interested in creating a variety of art projects, who may wish to
pursue a career in the arts. DCPS HOW operates as part of the After School
Program, or Out of School Time (OST) program.
DCPS HOW offers three different lesson sets based on the academic
semester showcases a different program and teaches new techniques, new
artists, and new projects! We design and align each program with DCPS Visual
Arts Development Cycles.
Lesson I – 20th Century
Innovations in Drawing.
Lesson II – Painting and Mixed Media Sculpture.
Lesson III – Theater, from the drawing board to performance.
DCPS HOW lessons cover a range of materials including: sculpting with
paper, charcoal drawing, plaster casting, small scale puppetry and
sculpture, and watercolor painting. DCPS
HOW lessons cover a range of artists and art movements, and include
investigations of art from around the world. DCPS teen participants also
delve gently into art
criticism, art history, and aesthetics.
DCPS Teen HOW students will:
variety of art careers including those in new media and arts administration
Write an Artist’s

Opening Reception for their exhibit;
Certificate of Participation during the Opening Reception of their art
exhibit or performance;
field trip to a local art museum or other culture venue; and
