COURSE DESCRIPTION OVERVIEW and LOCATIONS

ZCAF is proud of our growing partnership with DC Public Schools (DCPS). DCPS HOW is hosted by Columbia Heights Education Campus (CHEC) and Takoma Education Campus (TEC). DCPS HOW is designed for any DCPS student interested in creating a variety of art projects, who may wish to pursue a career in the arts. DCPS HOW operates as part of the After School Program, or Out of School Time (OST) program.

DCPS HOW offers three different lesson sets based on the academic calendar. Each semester showcases a different program and teaches new techniques, new artists, and new projects! We design and align each program with DCPS Visual Arts Development Cycles.

Lesson I – 20th Century Innovations in Drawing.

Lesson II – Painting and Mixed Media Sculpture.

Lesson III – Theater, from the drawing board to performance.

DCPS HOW lessons cover a range of materials including: sculpting with paper, charcoal drawing, plaster casting, small scale puppetry and sculpture, and watercolor painting. DCPS HOW lessons cover a range of artists and art movements, and include investigations of art from around the world. DCPS teen participants also delve gently into art criticism, art history, and aesthetics.

DCPS Teen HOW students will:
Discuss a variety of art careers including those in new media and arts administration
Write an Artist’s Statement;
Curate (design and hang) their own exhibit;
Learn how to label their art and organize their portfolio for college interviews;

Host an Opening Reception for their exhibit;
Receive a Certificate of Participation during the Opening Reception of their art exhibit or performance;

Enjoy a field trip to a local art museum or other culture venue; and
Experience a Q & A Session with a visit/s from a panel of guest artists
